Original Kouryuu

Kouryuu is basically a Mary Sue, but he's not a horrible cliched Mary Sue.

Koryuu was a samurai whose family was in a clan war with a clan of Ninjas. One day, he was fighting several ninjas in a bamboo thicket, when Kenshin happened by in his fights during the revolution. The ninjas got in Kenshin's way, and Kenshin's opponents got in Kouryuu's way, and they found themselves fighting alongside one another. A ninja snuck up on Kouryuu and gashed the left side of his back, dangerously close to his spine. Kenshin dispatched all the enemies, and took him to medical treatment. Kouryuu was so thankful to Kenshin, he vowed to repay him at some point in time. Kouryuu's family didn't approve of him fighting in the war, especially alongside the legendary Batousai, but he rebelled and became a Ronin once his arm healed. After the war, he never saw Kenshin again, until the beginning of the fanfiction story I wrote.

In the story, the main focus was still on Kenshin, and didn't make anywhere NEAR as much focus on Kouryuu that a normal Mary Sue gets. It was all about Kouryuu visiting Kenshin at Kaoru's dojo, and Kenshin explaining to the others what Kouryuu used to be like. Of course when they found out Kouryuu is in love with Kenshin, they all freak out, and even Kenshin admits he feels uneasy when Kouryuu gets frisky around him. In the end, Kouryuu left, and no hanky-panky was involved.

Kouryuu, I'd like to think, was a fairly well develouped character. As far as personality was concerned, he was kind, and had the same disposition as Kenshin, with Kaoru's outgoing attitude towards life mixed in there. Being in love with Kenshin, he'd quite often hug him, only to have Kenshin think of an excuse to escape. As a fighter, he used to wield two katanas, but after his back got cut, he couldn't use his left arm to lift a sword anymore, so he was forced to wield one. He had a swordsmith fuse his two katanas into a naginata. Once he became a Ronin, he got rid of his naginata, just as Ronins get rid of their katanas, leaving him with only his wakizashi. In the fanfiction I wrote, he had the wakizashi, but didn't wield it, and only used a bamboo stick.
